“The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily” is a famous literary fairy tale by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, published in 1795. The story is an allegory about bridging the gap between the world of the senses and the spiritual world, a theme it conveys through symbols and a magical journey involving characters like a green snake, a beautiful lily, a ferryman, and a prince. The tale is considered the founding example of the “artistic fairy tale” genre and explores themes of transformation, sacrifice, and spiritual realization.

The story’s plot and symbolism
  • The River:

The story begins with a magical river separating two lands, representing the separation between the material world of the senses and the world of the spirit.

  • The Ferryman:

An old ferryman facilitates the passage of people and ideas across the river.

  • The Green Snake and the Lily:

The green snake represents the earthly, sensory world, and the beautiful lily represents the ideal, spiritual world.

  • The Quest:

The tale follows characters, including a prince and the lily, on a quest to cross the river and unite the two lands.

    • Transformation and Sacrifice:

Through sacrifice, the snake eventually forms a bridge across the river, connecting the two realms and allowing for a new spiritual awareness to emerge.

  • The Outcome:

The union of the snake and the lily represents the reconciliation of the sensory and spiritual worlds, a new conscious spiritual awareness.
